Council

     In accordance with The Medical Act, the Council has the responsibility to govern, determine, control, and administer the affairs of the College, including:
  • exercise disciplinary jurisdiction over members, associate members and medical corporations;
  • enter into or make or cause to be entered into or make any contract or agreement which the College may lawfully enter into or make;
  • cancel the licence of any member, associate member or medical corporation for non-payment of fees under The Medical Act or the by-laws of the College and impose terms or conditions on the reinstatement of the licence;
  • authorize any Committee of Council to exercise and carry out any of the powers, authorities, rights, privileges and duties conferred or imposed upon the council by The Medical Act;
  • enter into such agreements and make such arrangements as it sees fit to promote and maintain the standards of health care;
  • establish and maintain professional standards of medical practice.
     Council has the power to make By-Laws for the exercise and carrying out of its powers, rights and duties and make specific rules regarding the manner in which the College operates.

     Certain functions are expressly conferred on Council by The Medical Act, including making Regulations, but only with the approval of the Lieutenant Governor in Council. 

     Council has adopted a policy governance model and strives to govern with an emphasis on strategic leadership, including a commitment to:

  • obtaining public and membership input;
  • encouragement of a diversity of viewpoints; and
  • ensuring clear distinction between Council and College staff roles.
