Assessment for Entry into Family Practice
The assessment will consist of three components, in the following order:
| |
1) |
The orientation will last approximately 2.5 days and will include modules such as a review of the Canadian health care system and other information a candidate should know before seeing patients, practical skills ranging from charting in the SOAP format to a review of pelvic exams with the aid of clinical teaching associates, as well as an orientation to the actual assessment process. |
| |
2) |
The second component is a three-day assessment of knowledge, skills and attitudes using tools such as a multiple-choice questionnaire, a short-answer Therapeutics assessment, a Structured Oral Interview and encounters with simulated patients. |
| |
3) |
The final component will consist of a three-month clinical field assessment in rural Manitoba including both office practice and assessment of emergency skills. |
At the end of the clinical field assessment, a university committee will review the results of each assessment component and make a recommendation to the College of Physicians and Surgeons regarding readiness to practise and/or the need for further training.
Should the need for re-training be identified, neither the University nor the College is obligated to provide re-training. That is the sole responsibility of the candidate.
