After nearly five years of preparation, Council has now approved the requirement for all Manitoba physicians to participate in one of the two national continuing professional development programs, either the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) MainPro or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) Maintenance of Certification/Continuing Professional Development. Many members already participate. Both the CFPC and the RCPSC permit licensed physicians to participate in their Continuing Professional Development programs without becoming members of either College.
To coincide with license renewal, Council of the College has directed that commencing September 1, 2010, it will be mandatory that all licensed physicians enroll in one of the two CPD programs and indicate which program on their license renewal form.

This process was developed by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta and is also used by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia.
The Manitoba Physician Achievement Review (MPAR) is expected in 2011. MPAR is a performance assessment program for Manitoba physicians. It provides physicians with information about their medical practice in the form of a confidential report, based on feedback from their medical colleagues, co-workers and patients. This unbiased and multisource feedback helps physicians to improve their medical practices while building on their identified strengths. MPAR will promote a culture of continuous quality improvement among Manitoba physicians and offer a link between assessment and focused professional development. More information on MPAR will come in the near future.
