Temporary Locum
I. INTRODUCTION
The following information is designed to assist interested persons in understanding the requirements for registration as a Regulated Member – Provisional – Temporary-Locum and the issuing of a certificate of practice to practise in the province of Manitoba. This information cannot cover all circumstances and a definite answer with respect to registrability can only be given upon the submission of an application with supporting documents and the required documentation fee.
In any disagreement between this information and the wording of The Regulated Health Professions Act of Manitoba and Regulations thereunder, or any other legislation governing these matters, the terms of the legislation will prevail.

III. APPLICATION FOR MEDICAL REGISTRATION
Applicants for the temporary-locum class must complete the Application for Medical Registration (AMR). You will be required to submit the following fees at the time you submit your AMR: $200 Medical Council of Canada fee; $210 CPSM Review of Qualifications fee. Please note that application fees are non-refundable.
IV. DOCUMENTATION
If you are registered with physiciansapply.ca, you do not need to submit copies of the documents that are in your physiciansapply.ca profile, but you must select document sharing with CPSM. If you do not have a physiciansapply.ca profile, you will be required to submit original notarized copies of supporting documents. You will be contacted by CPSM following submission of your Application for Medical Registration with respect to the documentation that will be required.
Before registration is issued and prior to commencing practice, a recent passport-type photograph and evidence of identity, including evidence that the applicant is legally entitled to work in Canada (Canadian passport/birth certificate; passport and one of the following: permanent resident status, valid work permit, or Canadian citizenship) is required.
It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that the documentation is complete.
V. PROFESSIONAL LIABILITY INSURANCE
All Regulated Members in the temporary-locum class must hold professional liability coverage either as a member of the Canadian Medical Protective Association or carry a policy of professional liability insurance of at least $10,000,000.00 issued by a company licensed to carry on business in the province of Manitoba.
VI. ORIENTATION AND FEES REQUIRED
Once a position has been obtained in Manitoba, and before registration is issued, the applicant will be required to attend a group orientation. Registration and certificate of practice fees are due prior to commencing practice.
VII. CERTIFICATE OF PRACTICE (CERTIFICATE)
To engage in the practice of medicine in temporary-locum class, a member must hold a valid certificate of practice entitling the holder to practise in his or her field(s) of practice in accordance with CPSM General Regulation s.2.10(2).

- Monthly: A certificate for a calendar month or portion thereof may be issued at a reduced fee. This is primarily designed for those doing a locum tenens who will not be practising for more than six calendar months in the certificate fee year.
IX. CANCELLATION OF REGISTRATION [CPSM General Regulation, s. 3.88]
In addition to the cancellation requirements in the RHPA, s. 48(1) to 52, a physician’s provisional temporary – locum registration will be cancelled when the specified time period ends.
WARNING NOTICES
CPSM cannot be responsible for delays in registering persons who have not submitted their application and documents well in advance of arrival in Manitoba. CPSM cannot be responsible for delays due to incomplete documentation.
Applicants are cautioned that they must not engage in practice in this province until such time as a certificate of practice have been issued.
Applicants should advise referees that their name has been used, and that the application cannot be completed without responses. Therefore, prompt replies to our inquiries would be appreciated. Please ensure that you provide full e-mail or postal addresses of referees.
