Statement No. 1202 - Anaesthesia: Granting of Privileges

     Anaesthesia privileges should only be granted to physicians possessing a certificate in anaesthesia from The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or one of the following standards.

Standard A:
     Six months formal training in anaesthesia in an approved teaching centre.

Standard B:
     Physicians holding anaesthesia privileges as recommended by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba are considered to have appropriate credentials.

     Members receiving privileges on the basis of Standard A or Standard B, except in emergencies, should limit anaesthesia to patients in physical status I, II and III according to the American Society of Anaesthesiologists Protocol:

I. A normal healthy patient.
     II. A patient with mild systemic disease.
III. A patient with severe systemic disease that limits activity, but is not incapacitating.
IV. A patient with an incapacitating systemic disease that is a constant threat to life.
V. A moribund patient not expected to survive 24 hours with or without operation.


       Furthermore, anaesthesia for intrathoracic or neurosurgical procedures should not be undertaken by non-specialist anaesthetists.
