Anaesthesia
privileges should only be granted to physicians possessing a
certificate in anaesthesia from
The Royal College
of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or one of the following
standards.
Members
receiving privileges on the basis of Standard A or Standard B,
except in emergencies, should limit anaesthesia to patients in
physical status I, II and III according to the
American Society of
Anaesthesiologists Protocol:

I. |
A normal healthy patient.
|

|
II. |
A patient with mild systemic disease. |
|
III. |
A patient with severe systemic disease that limits
activity, but is not incapacitating. |
|
IV. |
A patient with an incapacitating systemic disease
that is a constant threat to life. |
|
V. |
A moribund patient not expected to survive 24 hours
with or without operation. |
Furthermore,
anaesthesia for intrathoracic or neurosurgical procedures should
not be undertaken by non-specialist anaesthetists.
