Nominations for 2026 Council Election Open
As a self-regulating profession, CPSM’s Council is the leadership body and plays a vital role in setting and guiding our organizational direction, guided by our mandate to protect the public.
The CPSM Election Committee has issued a call for nominations from registrants for the 2026 Council election.
Check your inbox: CPSM registrants were notified by email on February 5.
This year’s election will be held in early May for the following positions:
- Two positions for a registrant whose primary practice location is in Rural Manitoba.
- One position for a registrant whose primary practice location is in Winnipeg.
- One Associate Registrant (residents, physician assistants, and clinical assistants) position on Council. This position is elected annually.
Council comprises seven elected CPSM physicians, one elected Regulated Associate registrant representative, one U of M representative, the President, President-Elect, and Past-President and six public representatives.
What’s new and what’s changed
Several changes are taking effect this year. Read what you need to know below.
1) New Council Profile: What we look for in candidates
Council is guided by our responsibility to protect the public, including understanding the needs of vulnerable people in the healthcare system.
We are seeking candidates who can add the following attributes and experience to Council’s composition (see full Council Profile here).
2) New Electronic Voting System
This year’s election will be managed within the CPSM Portal. In previous years, we used a third-party platform. The election will still be electronic and completed within the portal. This change will not impact the confidentiality of the election. It allows us to manage the election process more efficiently.
3) New: Election Committee
In December 2025, Council approved amendments to the Affairs of the College Bylaw, which will take effect this election period. This includes the appointment of an Election Committee chosen by the Executive Committee of Council, to oversee and administer the nomination application process.
The role of the Election Committee is to bring forward qualified candidates; it does not exclude qualified candidates from the election.
The Election Committee is responsible for recruiting and assessing qualified candidates for Council elections in a fair, consistent, and transparent manner, ensuring that registrants with strong attributes and relevant and diverse experiences are put forward for election.
3) Change to electoral districts
Two other changes will take effect in this year’s election process:
- Four electoral districts become two
We are transitioning from four electoral districts (North, West, East, and Winnipeg) to two: Rural and Winnipeg.
- Entitlement to vote
Registrants may now vote for a candidate in any district. Previously, you could only vote for the candidates running in your own electoral district.
