Celebrating Pride Month
In June, we celebrate Pride Month to honour diversity, promote inclusion, and support the 2SLGBTQIA+ community to live authentically and without fear of discrimination. It is also a reminder that challenges persist for 2SLGBTQIA+ people across the world.
Discrimination, violence, and systemic barriers affect 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals, particularly those who are marginalized due to intersecting identities such as race, ethnicity, religion, (dis)ability, age, or socioeconomic status.
It is essential for us, as physicians, residents, physician assistants, clinical assistants, and medical learners, to acknowledge and support this important month. It’s up to us to create an environment that is accepting and welcoming of patients as they are.
We recognize and deeply appreciate the many CPSM registrants who have long demonstrated allyship, advocacy, and are committed to addressing systemic inequities.
Acknowledging and celebrating Pride Month can help build trust and support between medical professionals and 2SLGBTQIA+ people. It demonstrates that your practice environment is welcoming, safe, inclusive space where individuals can discuss their identities without fear of discrimination or judgment.
Pride Month is about acceptance. It is about human rights. It is about history.
This video from Oslo Pride is a powerful reminder of why 2SLGBTQIA+ pride and visibility are so important.
We invite you to reflect on how your practice can contribute to safer, more inclusive, and affirming care for 2SLGBTQIA+ people. Meaningful change begins with a commitment to listening, learning, and taking informed action—this month and every month.
