CPSM Registrar Receives Reg L. Perkin Award for Family Physician of the Year

Dr. Ainslie Mihalchuk, Registrar and CEO of CPSM, received the Reg L. Perkin Award for Family Physician of the Year - Manitoba from the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC). She was presented with the award at the Family Medicine Forum awards celebration on November 7 in Winnipeg.

The Reg L. Perkin Award for Family Physician of the Year is presented annually by the CFPC to recognize family physician members who exemplify what it means to be a family doctor: providing exceptional care to patients and contributing to the health and well-being of their communities.

Award recipients are chosen by their peers for providing exceptional patient care, being skilled clinicians, and contributing to their communities.

“I am aware of so many excellent family physicians practicing in Manitoba,” Dr. Mihalchuk noted appreciatively. “It is a humbling honour to be recognized by my peers for such a meaningful award.”

 She continues to maintain a clinical practice in Northeast Winnipeg while fulfilling her Registrar and CEO responsibilities.

“The thing I love the most about practicing family medicine is the relationships that I have with my patients and the trust and belief that they place in me to be there for them, even in their most difficult times. I maintain my clinical practice because of my patients,” she shared upon receiving news of her award. 

Medical regulation representation on a global scale

Maintaining her clinical practice also keeps her closely connected to challenges and opportunities in the profession.

As she steps into her newly appointed roles on national and international medical boards, her connection to both patients and the medical profession allows her to shape the future of medical regulation on a global scale.

In September, she was appointed as a director of the International Association of Medical Regulatory Authorities. As the sole Regulator voice from Canada on an international medical regulatory board, she brings a vital perspective to global discussions.

In October, she was appointed to the Medical Council of Canada as a council member. She is also a member-at-large of the Federation of Medical Regulatory Authorities of Canada Governance Committee.

She joined CPSM as Assistant Registrar of the Quality department in 2020 and was appointed by CPSM’s Council as Registrar and CEO on July 1, 2024.

About the Reg L. Perkin Award for Family Physician of the Year Award

The Family Physician of the Year award has been given by CFPC since 1972, initially as a single award. In 2002, the practice expanded to include one recipient from each of the 10 CFPC chapters, including Manitoba.
