National Physician Assistant Day
November 27 is National Physician Assistant Day, a day to recognize the vital role Physician Assistants hold within the healthcare system.
We often hear about ‘physician shortage’ and ‘physician burnout.’ What we don’t hear enough about is how Physician Assistants serve a critical role in extending physician capacity, thereby improving patient care and saving lives.
Regardless of their practice setting, physicians recognize that patient outcomes are enhanced when Physician Assistants are part of the care team. Their contributions go far beyond medical knowledge and the delivery of direct patient care. They listen actively to patient concerns, comfort them in times of distress, and explain medical information and answer questions their families may have. Their patient-centred approach makes a difference.
As the medical profession continues to face many challenges, Physician Assistants keep showing up to support patients, physicians, and their communities.
Manitoba was the first province to regulate Physician Assistants as members of the profession because we recognized the value they bring to patient care teams. We applaud that more provinces are recognizing Physician Assistants as crucial members of the profession.
Join me in demonstrating your recognition and gratitude to the Physician Assistants in your life.
Physician Assistants: Thank you for your positive contributions to shaping the future of medicine.
